Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is a health profession that offers a wide range of specialized services, from expert diagnosis to treatment and disease prevention.  The practice of physiotherapy is the assessment of physical function and the steps taken to optimize physical ability.

Client Eligibility Criteria

1. All clients must be residents of the catchment area served by RCHC.
2. All clients must demonstrate barriers to physiotherapy services elsewhere (No extended health insurance or other insurance to cover physiotherapy; no work related injures or motor vehicle accidents).

Priorities

1. Internal Referrals: active clients of RCHC services and are referred by their providers.
2. External Referrals: clients referred by medical doctors and other health care professionals outside of RCHC.
3. Self-Referred Patients: clients who need the service but are not referred by any health care providers.

Commonly treated injuries and conditions include:

• Neck pain                         
• Back pain                          
• Shoulder pain                  
• Knee pain            
• Joint sprains                     
• Headaches and pains     
• Fall prevention Arthritis
• Tendonitis
• Poor posture
• Muscle strains
• Sports injuries
• Physical deconditioning
• Osteoporosis         

Physiotherapy treatment at Rexdale CHC includes:

• Involves the client’s active participation
• Client education and advice on prevention
• Manual therapy (e.g. assisted stretching, mobilizations, and manual traction)
• Modalities (e.g. acupuncture, ultrasound, TENS, IFC, EMS, heat, ice, etc.)
• Individualized exercises and home exercises’ programs
• General cardio and conditioning exercises
• Pain control and self-management techniques

The physiotherapy sessions usually are from approximately ½ to 1 hour of one-on-one time with the therapist. Frequency will be recommended by the physiotherapist based on the severity of the condition. While some clients only require a few treatments in total others may require up to 6-8 weeks of treatment. Overall, treatment will be short-term with a focus on self-management. The treatment will not be continued indefinitely although the client may have a chronic condition.  Flare-ups may occur after discharge and some  additional treatments may be required at some point in future.
