Design Thinking with Rexdale Youth

Jun 29, 2017

Students participate in design thinking activities

Rexdale youth took part in two creative immersion projects involving design thinking – one focused on digital art, which culminated in an exhibit at Humber North Gallery, and the other focused on business, finance and banking, with a Dragon’s Den-style pitch at HSBC. The mentoring team led this project while facilitator Chris Duff from Inspired Initiatives led the grade nine and ten youth through the design thinking process, working on new case challenges over the course of six weeks.

From January to April, the grade nines worked on a project with Humber College Galleries, the Department of Unusual Certainties and Myseum Toronto. The exhibit—called “mAPPing the Territory”—explored ideas about identity, personas, values, social media apps and privacy. It asked, “How does the virtual space we inhabit relate to the physical and social reality of our community and examined this question from a youth perspective. Using mobile apps, the students told stories about the community, public space, privacy and local networks through cartography. The opening reception for mAPPing the Territory on March 7, 2017 included Humber College's Senior VP of Academic Laurie Rancourt and Deputy Mayor Vincent Crisanti. The exhibit ran until March 25, 2017 and more than 750 participants attended.
