What is Sickle Cell Disease?
An inherited blood disorder that affects the red blood cells, causing them to lose their round shape and become sickled and rigid. These abnormally shaped cells can cause blockages in blood vessels, cause intense pain and other complications that affect multiple organ systems. In Ontario, approximately 4000 people are affected with Sickle cell disease and across Canada 6,500 have sickle cell disease (Ontario Health, 2023).
Rexdale CHC Sickle Cell Disease Program aims to increase access to screening and comprehensive programing to help improve quality of life, reduce social and health inequities and ease the burden of the disease.
Programs and Services Include:
Primary care services for patients and families affected by sickle cell disease
Screening for sickle cell trait and sickle cell disease
Vaccinations: People with anemia may be at increased risk of vaccine preventable diseases. In addition to routine immunization, people living with SCD should receive additional vaccinations to help keep them safe. Our program can help facilitate you or your loved ones with getting up to date with required vaccinations.
