Youth Outreach Worker – Somali Speaking

Rexdale Community Health Centre (RCHC) is a non-profit, multi-service, community-based organization that serves communities in Rexdale and North-West Etobicoke. Operating out of five locations, RCHC offers core services that include: primary health care, health promotion, community development programs, Diabetes Education Centre and Pathways to Education.

This position is dedicated to the empowerment of young people and works with identified Somali youth and families in a comprehensive youth engagement initiative for marginalized youth, including prevention, early intervention, program development and community outreach activities under the auspices of the provincial Youth Outreach Worker Program.

We are looking for an individual with excellent experience to join our Youth and Family Services team as a Youth Outreach Worker who speaks Somali.

 RESPONSIBLE FOR:

  • To initiate, develop, implement and participate in community outreach activities with underserved Somali communities.
  • Ability to provide outreach and service in “non-traditional” and culturally appropriate, community-based ways that are responsive to the needs of youth and families.
  • To carry out brokerage/ advocacy/ resourcing functions and provide general information and referral services to designated youth and families.
  • To reach out to and engage marginalized Somali youth in activities promoting assets, competencies and resiliency while using a Stages of Change model
  • To work collaboratively with youth, parents, youth service providers, law enforcement, and community organizations/services to ensure that youth have access to programs, services and opportunities needed for healthy development
  • To liaise and consult with the community, Boards of Education, schools and other service providers as required regarding the particular needs of marginalized youth and families
  • To build an understanding of the needs, issues, goals, aspirations, skills and abilities of youth and build on existing maps of services, programs and community assets available in the local neighbourhood and to help initiate new services in response to identified service requests and community needs.
  • Facilitate partnerships with community agencies, businesses, government and informal community groups to offer programs using arts, culture, civic engagement and recreation.
  • To engage parents through existing parent groups, faith communities, etc., to provide education and information on issues related to parenting, as well as services available
  • To facilitate connections between youth and their neighbourhood and promote awareness of the positive role of youth in the community.
  • To identify emerging community issues, service gaps and opportunities for action to build on community capacity
  • To organize and participate in public education seminars, workshops, groups and training for youth, parents and service providers.
  • A strengths-based, anti-racism/anti-oppression, and youth engagement philosophy of service provision and a belief in youth resilience.
  • To maintain service statistics and record all services as required
  • To prepare and share program reviews quarterly with the CHC supervisor and ensure that documentation and service statistics on the Outreach Record (OR) are completed in a timely manner
  • Engage in regular supervision with the Supervisor overseeing the YOW(s)
  • To actively participate in the required Youth Outreach Program and RCHC Team meetings

 QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Related Community College Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree and 2 years of directly related experience working with marginalized youth.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and negotiate effectively within a multi-disciplinary team of service providers.
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to the life experiences and needs of the Somali youth community.
  • Fluency in English and Somali.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Access to a vehicle and/or access to transportation within the GTA

Rate: $44,197 – $53,251 annually (plus benefits)

Hours per week: 35 hours per week

Starting date:  ASAP
