Diabetes Screening: Why Early Detection Matters

Diabetes often develops gradually, and many people do not experience noticeable symptoms in its early stages. That is why diabetes screening is an important part of preventive health care. It can identify high blood sugar or prediabetes before complications develop, giving you and your health care provider the opportunity to take steps that support your long-term health.

At Rexdale Community Health Centre, we encourage patients to learn about their risk factors and discuss diabetes screening with a member of their primary care team.

Who Should Consider Diabetes Screening?

Your health care provider may recommend diabetes screening based on your age, personal health history, family history, and other risk factors. You may benefit from screening if you:

  • Are age 40 or older
  • Have a parent, brother, or sister with diabetes
  • Are overweight or have obesity
  • Have high blood pressure or high cholesterol
  • Have prediabetes or had gestational diabetes during pregnancy
  • Have a physically inactive lifestyle
  • Belong to a population with a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes

Even if you feel healthy, screening may still be appropriate depending on your individual risk.

Assess Your Risk With CANRISK

If you are unsure whether you may be at risk, the CANRISK (Canadian Diabetes Risk Questionnaire) is a helpful tool. It asks questions about your age, family history, lifestyle, and overall health to estimate your risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

The questionnaire does not diagnose diabetes, but it can help you decide whether to speak with your health care provider about screening.

You can complete the CANRISK questionnaire here: CANRISK LINK.

Why Early Screening Is Important

Diabetes screening can detect concerns before symptoms appear. If prediabetes or diabetes is identified early, your health care provider can recommend lifestyle changes, ongoing monitoring, or treatment based on your individual needs. Early management may help reduce the risk of complications affecting the heart, kidneys, eyes, and nerves.

Regular check-ups also provide an opportunity to review your overall health and discuss ways to reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Supporting Your Health

If you have risk factors for diabetes or are unsure when you should be screened, speak with a health care provider. Diabetes screening is a simple step that supports early identification and helps you make informed decisions about your health.

At Rexdale Community Health Centre, our primary care team provides preventive health services, health assessments, and ongoing support to help individuals and families manage their health with confidence.
